This course is designed for the intermediate level. It invites you to expand your sketchbook into a visual diary, using gardens, forests, beaches, and the natural world as inspiration, while exploring colour, texture, and playful mixed-media techniques.
I find the natural world's colours, shapes, and textures an endless source of inspiration, and filling sketchbook pages with these observations is a vital part of my creative practice. My sketchbooks are where I experiment with materials, discover new colour combinations, and allow myself the freedom to play.
Hey, I'm Katie!
I’m an illustrator and artist from New Zealand who is now based on Vancouver Island, Canada. I work with international clients on projects in publishing, surface pattern design, and art licensing. I also run my own brand, In My Backyard, which features a line of stationery and illustrated goods.
I find the colours, shapes and textures of the natural world an endless source of inspiration, and filling sketchbook pages with these observations is a vital part of my practice. My sketchbooks are where I can try out materials, discover new colour combinations

Course content
The course has 8 modules for 6+ hours of learning and practicing. It also includes 21+ full-length artwork tutorials! You can pause and replay the videos as much as you want. The course is suitable for everyone, as long as you have a love for nature and all the wonders it holds! Each module starts with a warm-up exercise to get your creativity flowing, and then progresses to more advanced lessons.

In all my videos, I try to use as many visual elements as possible, such as pictures and references, so you can take inspiration and practice. You can follow each step as I show it to you, and you can comment and compare with other students under each video or in the group to resolve any doubts and learn new tricks!
